After Foursquasre and Gowalla, Facebook is going to “Places” as the strategy to tap into the local market business. The New York Times announced the new step forward to challenge the Google´s local market competition.
Facebook places allows users to check in to stores, restaurants and other locations and sharing them with friends.
Pete Cashmore founder and Mashable CEO, writes a weekly social networking column for CNN and he outlined similar features shared by Facebook places and the Foursquare and Gowala services.
The “check ins” model is identical. The “Mayorships” merit badges is a feature Facebook is not going to use, which makes a difference with Foursquare and Gowala.
Facebook people and outside experts agree that the largest social network in the world has a competitive advantage as they have more than 500 million users that could help them dominate the local business market niche.
The “places” feature is becoming very popular. Foursquare announced they had more than 1 million “check ins” during July and Facebook expects to surpass that figure in a matter of weeks.
Foursquare people believe they will benefit from Facebook going “places”, because “ If Facebook thinks that location is a good idea, then we are on to something” Dennis Crowley, Foursquare CEO, said.
Michael Sharon, “Places” product manager said: “This is not a service to broadcast location at all times, but rather one to share where you are, who you are with, when you want to.
It lets you find friends that are nearby and help you discover nearby places”
The battle for Facebook to become the #1 Internet hub is on and “Places” will help Facebook to attract more advertising dollars by bringing more small business online which will be found easily by users.
Google on the other hand is adding more social features to its services. Google is expanding its efforts to the small business advertising market.
Mobile advertising market and search have great potential and Google and Facebook are working to dominate that market.
